SafetyWorks Success

Around 270 Year 6 students from Gateshead attended SafetyWorks! during January 2012 and received important safety messages including:

  • Fire Safety

  • Road Safety

  • First Aid

  • Metro Safety

  • Internet Safety

  • Police messages

Feedback from teachers has been very positive:

  • ‘The children and staff all found this an excellent experience. It was an enjoyable way to get the messages across. The facilities were great and well suited’ Anne Hill, Teacher, St Joseph’s Primary School

  • ‘The children really enjoyed the session. They were engaged throughout and benefitted from the ‘real life’ scenarios and practical nature of the morning’. Laura Garrett, Teacher, Kelvin Grove Primary School. Washington Pilot Programme.

In addition to this, SafetyWorks! are running a pilot programme with schools from the Washington area in conjunction with the Police Neighbourhood Team. Eighteen schools will attend with their pupils and it is anticipated that 800 young people will receive messages covering:

  • Fire Safety

  • Internet Safety

  • First Aid

  • Consequences of Crime (Northumbria Police)

  • Environmental Messages (Sunderland Council).

To date, around 290 pupils have attended the programme and Feedback from Head Teachers, Pupils and Northumbria Police so far has been very positive, examples of feedback include:

  • “Excellent, worthwhile experience, children really enjoyed the various activities and extended their knowledge. They were able to relate the various scenarios to their everyday lives and it made them think about the effect of their and other’s actions”. Maureen Wren, Teacher, George Washington Primary School

  • “Our pupils attended SafetyWorks last year with our local policing team. Our pupils found it an enjoyable experience but more importantly they came away having learnt some important lessons. Staff were so impressed with the facility we have arranged for another visit for next year.” Gordon Fraser, Deputy Head, Biddick School)

Feedback from Northumbria Police:

  • “SafetyWorks is an excellent facility where young people can learn about real issues in a fun and interactive way”
    Inspector Barrett

  • “SafetyWorks provides a fantastic delivery platform for Police and Partners to deliver key messages to target groups in a time efficient and cost effective manner”.
    PC O’Sullivan

Northumbria Police also sent surveys for pupils and staff to complete following their visit. Results include:

  • 100% positive feedback from both staff and pupils
  • 100% of pupils graded SafetyWorks 5/5 for enjoyable experience
  • 100% of staff surveyed recorded they would with to participate in a future visit if possible.

SafetyWorks! hope to build on the success of the Year 6 Washington programme and offer SafetyWorks! for other vulnerable groups across Sunderland Local Authority Area.
