Around 270 Year 6 students from Gateshead attended SafetyWorks! during January 2012 and received important safety messages including:

  • Fire Safety

  • Road Safety

  • First Aid

  • Metro Safety

  • Internet Safety

  • Police messages

Feedback from teachers has been very positive:

  • ‘The children and staff all found this an excellent experience. It was an enjoyable way to get the messages across. The facilities were great and well suited’ Anne Hill, Teacher, St Joseph’s Primary School

  • ‘The children really enjoyed the session. They were engaged throughout and benefitted from the ‘real life’ scenarios and practical nature of the morning’. Laura Garrett, Teacher, Kelvin Grove Primary School. Washington Pilot Programme.

In addition to this, SafetyWorks! are running a pilot programme with schools from the Washington area in conjunction with the Police Neighbourhood Team. Eighteen schools will attend with their pupils and it is anticipated that 800 young people will receive messages covering:

To date, around 290 pupils have attended the programme and Feedback from Head Teachers, Pupils and Northumbria Police so far has been very positive, examples of feedback include:

They were able to relate the various scenarios to their everyday lives and it made them think about the effect of their and other’s actions”. Maureen Wren, Teacher, George Washington Primary School

  • “Our pupils attended SafetyWorks last year with our local policing team. Our pupils found it an enjoyable experience but more importantly they came away having learnt some important lessons. Staff were so impressed with the facility we have arranged for another visit for next year.” Gordon Fraser, Deputy Head, Biddick School)

Visit to SafetyWorks! by Castle Views Enterprise Academy

Castle View Enterprise Academy Year 8 students recently visited SafetyWorks! and reported the visit in their July issue of their newsletter.

Year 8 students went to Newcastle to visit Safety Works, which is an indoor interactive centre and it is used to teach children about safety in the community. It is made to look like a movie set with six or seven scenarios, which include Metro platforms, Sainsbury’s, a road and an A&E hospital room. Here, students learned vital first aid skills, such as treating burns, performing CPR and treating fractures and breaks.

Safety Works is sponsored by a number of organisations, such as, Tyne and Wear Fire Service and Northumbria Police. Many of the Year 8 visitors had a go at using a defibrillator, which is commonly used for treatment in life-threatening emergencies.

All of the students learnt a variety of things, such as how to use the Metro platform ‘Help Point’ or the age limits for buying certain things, such as fireworks.

The Year 8 students loved this trip, and not just because they were getting out of the

Academy for a day, or was it?

New Initiative at SafetyWorks!

Following the success of the programme for the schools in Washington, SafetyWorks! will be running a similar programme for all of the schools in the Sunderland North Area.  650 children from 21 schools in the area are expected to attend the Centre from September 2012 through to July 2013. All of the primary schools and comprehensive schools are scheduled to visit. In addition bespoke sessions have been designed for children attending SafetyWorks from the Children’s Residential Homes across Sunderland.

Once again, this initiative, commissioned by the Sunderland North LMAP (Local Multi Agency Problem Solving group) involves working in partnership with the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, Sunderland City Council, English Heritage and Gentoo with the aim of raising awareness of safety and reducing anti-social behaviour.

Transport is provided utilising the SafetyWorks Minibus, Police Minibus and if necessary the LMAP will fund an additional minibus.

Feedback from the schools so far, has been positive. Ms Gamble, teacher at Bexhill Junior and Infant School said, “All children were fully engaged throughout the session. The activities were interactive, fun and enjoyable which made it a fantastic learning experience for the children. We would definitely use the Centre again, as the children  thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon. They gained a lot of valuable and life-saving information, I would certainly recommend SafetyWorks to others”.
